On August 6, Composer Residency conductor John Hughes will interview featured composer Elaine Hagenberg; and Sam Handley, GLFM director-designate, talks with jazz composer, trumpeter and band leader Paul Dietrich. You’ll hear two of Elaine Hagenberg’s pieces that were to have been performed on this summer’s concert, and hear about her composition process, from initial musical ideas to final execution. How she derives inspiration from and how she handles text, which is always an issue for a choral composer. On the other hand, Paul Dietrich is composing for instruments so isn’t concerned with text, but he also is dealing with inspiration and musical ideas, and how to pare many ideas down to the few most important ideas to develop into a piece. You’ll also see a short video created during the recording process of Paul’s recent big band album. Enjoy the conversation and the music!
