NEWS FLASH: Amelia Piano Trio violinist Anthea Kreston will do a live interview tomorrow, July 6, during Vicki Nonn’s noon hour show on Wisconsin Public Radio’s News and Classical Music stations.
Here’s what’s on tap for the weekend:
Friday, July 8
10:00 AM: Free "master class" with Yuki and Tomoko Mack, duo-pianists, and students at the Oshkosh Public Library, 106 Washington Ave., Oshkosh, WI. Master classes offer the opportunity to get behind the scenes and watch "master" artists listen to and coach talented students. It's a chance to see the creative process in action, watch different ideas being tried out, and see how problems get solved. Music will include 4-hand piano pieces, a trio and a quintet for piano and strings.
7:30 PM: Yuki and Tomoko Mack, duo-pianists. Thrasher Opera House, Green Lake. Pre-concert conversation with the artists at 6:45.
A second piano will join the Steinway on stage at the opera house for this exciting concert by the Mack sisters. Born in Japan, they have concertized throughout the US, as well as Quebec, Milan and Tokyo. They have won prizes in three duo-piano competitions, including first prize in the International Piano Duo Competition in Tokyo. Their program, sure to delight the audience, ranges from Mozart to Debussy to Leonard Bernstein's popular Symphonic Dances from West Side Story.
Saturday, July 9
7:30 PM: The Amelia Piano Trio and Friends. Rodman Center for the Arts, Ripon College. (NOTE VENUE- a change from what was published in the season brochure) Pre-concert conversation with the artists at 6:45.
A Festival favorite, the Amelia Piano Trio is joined by three stellar guest artists: violinist Jesse Mills from New York, violist Atar Arad from Indiana University, and bassist Mark Urness from Lawrence University. The Amelia Trio, returning to the Festival for the 5th time, has established a reputation for exciting, inspiring performances. Last winter, the trio toured the West in a unique program with the Sean Curran Dance Company of New York. The Seattle Times wrote, "Violinist Anthea Kreston, cellist Jason Duckles, and pianist Rieko Aizawa are each superb in their own right. Together they make music that is daring, lively, and completely engrossing." Their program comprises two favorite works: Dvorak's Piano Quintet No. 2, and Schubert's famed "Trout" Quintet.
Sunday, July 10
11:00 AM: Free master class with Atar Arad at the Rodman Center for the Arts, Ripon College. Renowned violist Atar Arad, formerly a member of the Cleveland Quartet and currently on the faculty at Indiana University and Ravinia Festival's Steans Institute for the Arts, coaches talented students from the Festival's chamber music workshop.
4:00 PM: The Final Round of the Inaugural Green Lake Festival National Chamber Music Competition! Thrasher Opera House, Green Lake
Be there to witness two outstanding chamber ensembles vie for first and second place prizes of $2,500 and $1,500 in this exciting new event. Chosen in a blind listening process by the Amelia Piano Trio are the two final groups: the Finisterra Piano Trio from Seattle and the Hyperion String Quartet from Hartford, CT. These two very impressive groups will each play half of the program, after which refreshments will be served while the judges deliberate and the audience also chooses the winner of the audience prize. The Finisterra Trio, whose members come from Canada, Korea and the US, has played in numerous chamber music series in the Northwest and won the Silver Medal at the Ainetti International chamber Music Competition in Verona, Italy. The Hyperion String Quartet won a top prize in the Colman Chamber Music Competition and is this summer's Young Artist ensemble-in-residence at the Vail Valley Music Festival.
